The S60 features a world’s first in automotive safety: Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake. The S60 uses radar and camera technologies to detect a pedestrian in the path of the vehicle. Jackson MS Volvo dealer Paul Moak Volvo announces the all-new 2011 Volvo S60 sedan featuring Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake.  The 2011 Volvo S60 sedan, released to the U.S. from Sweden in September, is the newest addition to the Volvo model lineup.  One of the most unique features of the S60 is Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, a world’s first in preventative safety engineering.  Combining radar and camera technologies, the S60 detects objects in the path of the car and determines whether or not the object is a pedestrian.  If detected as a pedestrian, the S60 alerts the driver with audible and visual warnings.  If the driver fails to stop the vehicle, the system will apply braking force to avoid striking the pedestrian, or at lease minimize the impact speed and severity of any injuries.  The S60 will come to a complete stop at speeds of 22 mph or less.  The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety reports that pedestrian motor vehicle crashes account 12% of crash deaths.  Each year, approximately 70,000 pedestrians are injured in motor vehicle crashes and 4,700 pedestrians are killed in the US.  Fifty percent of those fatal accidents occurred at speeds of less than 16 mph.

The 2011 S60 is also equipped with the revolutionary City Safety feature first pioneered by Volvo on the 2010 XC60 Crossover which debuted in the fall of 2009.  The S60 joins the XC60 as a “car that stops itself” in order to prevent collisions in stop-and-go city traffic.  City Safety comes standard on all XC60 crossovers and S60 sedans, and helps avoid or reduce the consequences of a collision at low speed by automatically braking the car and at the same time restricting engine power.  This truly innovative safety system is designed to prevent or mitigate collisions occurring at speeds of 19 mph or less.  Engineers estimate that City Safety can prevent up to 50% of all rear end collisions.  70% of all collisions occur at speeds of less than 10 mph or less, and 50% of these occur in city traffic situations.

The inaugural Euro Fest in 2009 drew an estimated 10,000 to 14,000 spectators who were able to view the autos and motorcycles up close as well as take unlimited photos. Spectators and autos came from five states to see this one of a kind collection, from five different countries, which has become a most successful regional event. On display were Mercedes Benz, Ferrari, Alfa Romero, Jaguar, Austin Healy, MG, Volvo, Land Rover, Maserati, Rover, Morgan, Volkswagen, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, BMW, and Porsche. Triumph and BSA motorcycles were also shown. All of these and more are expected for viewing this year and will be positioned on the walk ways throughout the Renaissance Center, allowing for casual walk along viewing. 

The Euro Fest will kick off with a march of Mississippi’s own Scottish Highland “Father of Waters,” Bagpipe and Drum Corps. Food vendors will be on hand selling pasta, pizza, fish and chips, Italian Sausage, bratwurst, Panini sandwiches, and other European foods.
